On Friday, 31st May 2024, The Granville Centre hosted a remarkable event commemorating Ratu Sukuna & Girmit Day, organized by the NSW Fiji Business Council. The celebration brought together a diverse group of attendees to honor Fijian heritage and the indomitable spirit of the Girmitiyas.

Honoring Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna

Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna was celebrated for his visionary leadership and pivotal role in preserving Fijian culture. Attendees reflected on his significant contributions to the social, economic, and political development of Fiji, highlighting his enduring legacy and profound influence.

Commemorating the Girmit Anniversary

The event also marked the 145th anniversary of Girmit in Fiji, honoring the courage and resilience of the Indian indentured laborers and their descendants. We remembered the parents, grandparents, siblings, spouses, and children who have connected generations of Fijians and Australians to their ancestral roots in India, celebrating their strength and perseverance.

Acknowledging Our Supporters

The event was made possible through the generous support of our sponsoring agencies, the Fiji Consulate General & Trade Commission and the Fiji High Commission. The contributions of speakers, entertainers, decorators, helpers, caterers, the Kava supplier, magazine committee, MCs, marketing table holders, and NSW Fiji Business Council members were crucial in making this celebration a success.

Looking Ahead

The NSW Fiji Business Council is deeply grateful for the enthusiasm and engagement of all attendees. We look forward to continuing our journey together, fostering strong connections, and celebrating our rich heritage at future events.

Join us in future celebrations as we continue to honor and preserve our vibrant culture and history.
